24.4 BMI

One BMI. Two different readings.

Standard rangesHealthy weight range
South Asian rangesOverweight range

Adult categories · shared scale 15–40

The standard chart says “healthy weight”. South Asian guidance already places this in the overweight range—a reason to look beyond the reassuring label.

BMI is a starting point, not a diagnosis. It cannot measure visceral fat.

How to read this comparison

Adult BMI categories need different interpretation during pregnancy, with high muscle mass, or from age 65. Other ancestries can also have lower thresholds. A category alone cannot predict your health.

Comparable age- and sex-adjusted rates of new type 2 diabetes in an English cohort of 1.47 million adults. Not an individual risk estimate.

Study details and source

South Asian estimate: BMI 23.9 (95% CI 23.6–24.0). An observational association, not proof of causation or an equivalence for all metabolic disease.

Your measurements

Adult educational tools. Enter only what you want to calculate. Measurements stay in this browser and are never included in a guide or clinic signup.

Body-fat and resting-energy formulas use binary sex categories from their original studies; they may not reflect your physiology. The displayed input limits are tool limits, not health thresholds.

Body Mass Index

Your number, with a South Asian perspective

Enter height and weight to see your BMI, its range and what it can mean for your health.

Why the lower thresholds? South Asian adults can develop metabolic health risks at a lower BMI. In the US, the American Diabetes Association advises diabetes screening for Asian American adults from a BMI of 23, rather than 25. NICE starts the overweight range at 23 and the obesity range at 27.5, compared with 25 and 30 in its general adult guidance.

What this can mean for your health

BMI is one clue to health risks such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Your waist measurement and family history help complete the picture.

BMI ranges for South Asian adults

  • Underweight range

    Below 18.5

  • Below overweight threshold

    18.5 to below 23

  • Overweight range

    23 to below 27.5

  • Obesity range

    27.5 and above

BMI describes weight relative to height. It does not measure body fat or predict your personal chance of disease. These are adult screening ranges, not a diagnosis. Pregnancy, high muscle mass and age 65 or over need a different or more careful interpretation.

For adults with BMI below 35, NICE uses waist-to-height ratio alongside BMI. Its general target is a waist less than half your height. This does not diagnose disease or quantify visceral fat.

Estimated Body Fat

An approximation with important limits

Enter adult age, height, weight and formula sex.

The Deurenberg equation estimates body fat from BMI, age and sex. It is not an individual measurement or a South Asian calibrated diagnosis. It cannot establish muscle loss or sarcopenic obesity.

We suppress estimates outside this tool’s BMI range of 15–40 or plausible output range. Pregnancy, unusual muscle mass and changing body composition can make it misleading.

Resting Energy

Estimated energy at rest

Enter age 19–78, height, weight and formula sex.

The Mifflin–St Jeor equation estimates resting energy expenditure. It is not a calorie prescription or a prediction of weight change. Daily activity and individual physiology change actual needs.
